Lillian Mandel was born February 26th, 1912 in the neighborhood that became the present day Harlem. From the time she was 16, she went to work for Jack Leibowitz, who created the iconic Action Comics comic featuring Superman and went on to form DC Comics which published other popular titles such as Batman and Green Hornet. Lillian worked as Jack's personal assistant for over 60 years and moved with him to Warner Brothers pictures when DC was acquired. She has spent the last 45 years living on her own in a Styvesent Town apartment. Over that time she served as an regular volunteer at Beth Israel hospital and as an active member of Brotherhood Synagogue in Manhattan. She loves to experience the world on her own, preferring to walk everywhere. She recently celebrated her 100th birthday and has proudly called New York City her home for every year of her life.
